Prayer and Remembrance
By Jeff Tiberii

Sunday July 29th, 2007 6:09pm

Several hundred people passed through the doors of Wait Chapel this afternoon for quiet moments of prayer, reflection and thoughts about Skip Prosser. Students, athletes, friends, fans and many others signed prayer books and shed tears for the coach who guided the Wake Forest basketball team over the past six seasons. The scene inside the Chapel was silent as most people spent 15-20 minutes in line before signing the prayer books.

Outside, on the rain-soaked quad, lay remnants of toilet paper from Thursday nights Quad Rolling.

I spoke briefly with a handful of people who attended the service, many of whom said they did not wish to comment.

I did speak with Willie Howard Hawkins, a Winston-Salem resident and long time Demon Deacon fan. He told me his days of rooting for the Wake Forest basketball team date back to Bones McKinney (head coach from 1958-65) who led Wake to the 1962 Final Four.

Hawkins fought back tears as we talked:

"He was just a super human being," Hawkins shared. "He has been a blessing to the community and the school. The school itself will survive, but he will always be part of this community and this school.

"It’s going to be tough"
